Rakesh Singh Appointed as New Chairman of Karnataka RERA

Following a High Court interim order preventing Naveen Raj Singh, Principal Secretary of the Housing Department, from serving as the acting chairperson of Karnataka RERA, the state government has appointed retired IAS officer Rakesh Singh as the new chairperson. The appointment was made on Thursday.

Singh has previously worked as the head of the water resources department, administrator for BBMP, and also as additional chief secretary of the urban development department (UDD).

On Tuesday, Justice R Nataraj of the High Court, while hearing a petition against Naveen Raj Singh's appointment as acting chairperson of K-RERA, stated that it is inadvisable for him to continue in the role. The court noted that the Karnataka Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Rules, 2017 do not allow for a state government officer or third party to be appointed as an in-charge chairperson to fill the vacancy.

The judge's order stated that the senior-most member of K-RERA will serve as the acting chairperson until a new appointment is made according to the rules.
